Artist Statement
It was a moment in which I felt the incredible power of art to inspire and even change one’s life.
I was in high school at the time and after seeing a painting that gave me goose bumps I knew at that very moment that creating art is what I would do as my life’s work.
As being photographer for several years in Japan, I was fascinated by how light and shadow creates beauty. While I enjoyed creating beauty by controlling light, the art form didn’t fulfill my desire to express myself. That quest brought me on a journey to United States where I began gathering experience and perspective as I saw deferent aspects of artistic expression.
Since arriving in the United States to pursue my goals as an artist, and broaden my life experiences, I have come to adore the diversity of New York City. Everyday life in New York is full of stimulation, not just because the city offers so much to see and do but from the people who are here. My connection to this city began the moment I arrived. To this day, the more I experience this city, the further I fall in love. The history, the intense, positive energy, and the dreams we all hold in our hearts come together to create a unique combination.
I also wonder what is certain in life…our existence or thing we create or nothing but our spirit. Human life is short compare to cosmic cycle but I KNOW that I’m HERE, loving, crying, enjoying, laughing, and smiling…. In my painting, some time people are there physically, some time they are absent physically but still their love or attachment for that subject is there. These are what I have been trying to reflect in my work, how I see the world.
Sometimes we forget a simple but very important thing in life, to have love in your heart for yourself and everyone around you and appreciate all the little things you get in life. Art has a powerful way of reminding us how precious our lives are. I take pride in my choice to become an artist. Sure, it’s not an easy life, but I know that when someone feels my soul and hears my inner voice expressed in my work, it could become the kind of life changing moment for them that I was blessed to have at a young age. As art created my pursuits, perhaps so too will another follow that same path and connect the generations…
Little thing can make a great difference, that’s my principle.

Bio
Michiyo Fukushima was born in New Delhi, India while her family was transfered by her father's company for 5 years. She always enjoyed doodling as a kid, loved art class in school. Her high-school art teacher suggested her taking private lesson from him and entering national high-school student competition. She painted 51 x 64" canvas with oil paint and she ended up wining the competition.
She studied photography at two year collage and became photographer working for magazines.
While she enjoyed photography, she felt it wasn't really fulfilling her passion for creation.
She decided to study abroad to broaden life experience. The art school she found was happened to be located in New York City. When she went to register class at the art school, the only class available was watercolor class.
It didn't take much time that she found herself falling in love with New York City and the watercolor medium....
